Regenerating ecosystems through food systems

Síolta Chroí is a social enterprise dedicated to ecosystem regeneration through education on agroecology, and community engagement.

‘Local food systems; that is where you can make a difference. You can't create a different supply chain - that is not our role. Our role is to build from the ground up, from the soil up, from the earthworms up and do the real work, care for the earth, care for our communities’. Dr. Vandana Shiva

Our work spans three interconnected areas...

We have took inspiration from the work of Satish Kumar, the trilogy of Soil-Soul-Society. This trilogy resonates strongly with our approach as Síolta Chroí; our focus on ecosystem restoration through a social and global justice approach and exploring regenerative practices for ecosystems that includes regeneration of the humans as well as the wider ecosystems

Soil

The organic part of soil is "humus" — a word tied to homo (human) and humilitas (humility), with humilis meaning "humble" or "from the earth." Etymologically and spiritually, humans are soil. Healthy soil sustains all life: storing carbon, filtering water, and nourishing the biodiversity we depend on.

Soul

Regeneration is a chance to heal not just biodiversity and nature, but ourselves and our communities — reconnecting with Indigenous and place-based ecological knowledge, and mending the perceived separation between people and the living Earth.

Society

Food is big business, and our food systems profoundly shape climate, biodiversity, and our physical and mental health. Global trade has narrowed diversity and nutrition, making healthy food a luxury rather than a right. Seeds, fertilisers, supply chains, and markets are increasingly controlled by large agribusiness — leaving farmers, communities, and nature to carry the costs.

What we do

Síolta Chroí is a living education centre and demonstration site rooted in regenerative practice, ecological restoration, and community resilience. We deliver courses, farm tours, retreats, workshops, and community events focused on regenerative agriculture, food growing, biodiversity, and reconnecting people with nature.Alongside our work in Monaghan, we also deliver educational programmes nationwide.

Our flagship six-week Introduction to Regenerative Agriculture programme engages farmers across Ireland in addressing climate, biodiversity, and food system challenges while building peer-support networks and practical skills. Through this work, we are helping to create communities of practice — connecting regenerative farmers, landholders, and local communities to support long-term ecological and social regeneration.

Farmers

We are here to support farmers transition to a more Regenerative/ Agroecological way of farming.

This type of Agriculture focuses on increasing the profits of the farmer, while simultaneously the restoring soil health, and regenerating the wider ecosystem
It requires a shift in mind-set alongside the shifts in changes to the dominant and extractive agricultural practices that have been promoted over the last decades into new ways of thinking and being. One that benefits the farmer, the ecosystem and the wider society.

Farmers and the environment are often pitted against each other in a lose lose battle. Farmers are blamed for many of the environmental issues.

What we at Síolta Chroí want for you as a farmer is healthy profitable farm business, with thriving farm ecosystem that is full of life, that is feeding your family and your community nutrient rich food that is in a great position to pass on to your children.

At Síolta Chroí we belief that farmers are the key to many of the issues we face. We want to support you build a thriving farm enterprise.

Our flagship 6-week Introduction to Regenerative Agriculture course is a first step to support you on this journey. We have an active community of farmers just like you supporting each other with the knowledge, skills, and support to do the work that is needed

We also have a community of farmers that are supporting each other to transition their farms to a more regenerative model We are here to support you on this journey.

Small holders

Are you living on a small holding and wanting to work more closely with the land and with nature? Perhaps you dream of growing more of your own food, creating habitat for wildlife, and living in a more connected and regenerative way.

Many of the people who come to Síolta Chroí are small holders — people living on smaller pieces of land rather than full-scale farms, from half an acre to five acres or more. They are seeking practical ways to grow food, care for the soil, and increase biodiversity while creating thriving, life-filled spaces for both people and wider nature.

People come not only to learn skills, but also to connect with others on a similar path — to find their tribe. At Síolta Chroí, we offer opportunities to learn, share knowledge, and become part of a supportive community rooted in cooperation, creativity, and care for the Earth. Through workshops, gatherings, and shared experiences, people empower one another to live more resilient, grounded, and regenerative lives.

Education and Training bodies

Síolta Chroí offers significant value to Education and Training Boards (ETBs) through its specialist expertise in regenerative agriculture, biodiversity, ecosystem restoration, sustainability, and community-based green skills education.

Síolta Chroí provides practical, learning experiences that directly align with the objectives of Ireland’s Green Skills 2030 strategy. Síolta Chroí delivers hands-on training in sustainable agriculture, habitat management, food growing, seed saving, ecological restoration, and climate-conscious land stewardship
.
Over recent years, Síolta Chroí has successfully partnered with several ETBs, including Cavan-Monaghan, Donegal, and Louth-Meath, delivering regenerative agriculture programmes and accredited Level 5 training in Farm Habitat Management. These programmes combine practical skills, peer-to-peer learning, and ecological knowledge in ways that support both learners and rural communities.

Síolta Chroí can support ETBs by developing and delivering innovative green skills programmes, upskilling staff, and creating learning pathways that respond to emerging environmental challenges and opportunities. Its work aligns strongly with identified national skills gaps in biodiversity, sustainability, ecosystem services, and nature restoration.

The organisation can also offer an existing infrastructure and demonstration site that can support cost-effective, experiential learning for learners, educators, communities, and businesses.

Importantly, Síolta Chroí brings not only technical expertise, but also a strong education and impact approach — fostering unique learning environments. Through partnership with ETBs, Síolta Chroí can help build the practical knowledge, ecological awareness, and regenerative thinking needed to support Ireland’s transition toward a more sustainable and climate-resilient future.

Fun & Joy

Have fun and connect with Joy .We aim to create spaces of joy and fun. Because these are essential to a meaningful and well lived life . As Emma Goldman once said “I do not believe a movement fighting for freedom and a beautiful ideal should demand the denial of life and joy. If I can't dance, it's not my revolution!

Bigger than you

Connect with issues and ideas bigger than yourself — from climate and biodiversity to food systems and community resilience — and become part of creating positive change for people and planet.

Hope

In a world often starved of hope, we endeavour to create spaces for ‘Active Hope’ — acknowledging the systemic challenges we face while nurturing meaningful pathways forward. Inspired by the work of Joanna Macy, we believe hope is not passive optimism, but something we create together through action, connection, and care for the living world.

We are part of a global movement

Síolta Chroí is one of Ireland’s first Ecosystem Restoration Camps (ERCs), and we are connected to the Global Network of ERCs worldwide. We have been doing what we can to learn, experiment with, and practise ecosystem restoration on the land here in South Monaghan, while at the same time sharing and promoting these approaches with others throughout the island and beyond, connecting learning and networks across the world in order to share the best practice and enhance solidarity for these urgent efforts to restore ecosystems worldwide.
